The Psychology of Color

The Psychology Of Color: The Power of Pink

Let’s talk about the psychology of color. First off, there’s a lot to be said about our perception of color. It triggers us each, whether red as in a stoplight or blue as in a welcoming sky. In this way, colors make us do things. In a streetlight, it tells us when we can move on, and in the air above us tells us how (and how much) we can dress.

Colors also make us feel things. A favorite color of paint we use in our rooms — yes, almost all of us have a favorite color. But what does it mean? Why does a color make us… feel?

Color and Behavior

The psychology of color can, in fact, have a definite impact on our feelings, state of mind, and actions. There is actual science to it all, even if it seems non-intuitive that something as random as color can have a specific meaning. After all, some of us even change our favorite color of choice over our lifetimes (perhaps that means something, too).

The study of color is called color psychology. It’s a study of hues and how they play a role as a determinant in our behavior. When we choose a brown-bagged product, it’s almost universally implied that what we carry within it is considered being natural or down-to-earth. Even subtle changes in our home lighting have a calming effect when we tell our respective automated assistants to “turn the lights to blue.”

Color Coding

When you think of it, we do popularly code things in a common color-centric way: a “black tie” event would never see us showing up in a swimsuit; a “red-letter” day marks an important or happy event; and there has been more than one eternal optimist the world has accused of wearing “rose-colored glasses.”

Science has also made interesting arguments about color that have been downright astounding. Did you ever think about why our medical pills frequently carry color codes to suggest red as a stimulant? Studies even show that we are drawn to vibrant foods over those that appear plain or “bland” in their presentation.

It is only natural that the same would be true — even more so — for our fashion taste. We love colors that stress our sense of self, from our red dresses to our white diamonds.

The Amazing Power of Pink

For me, the color is pink. Whether “hot pink,” or a more subdued pink shade, I’m mad about them. It’s a fascinating color, capable of being a power statement and a sign of unruffled sophistication all at once.

Today one of the many beauties of pink is in its multifaceted, all-inclusive appeal. It is a color we associate with love and kindness. From eager anticipation of pink trappings for Valentine’s Day, to a crisp, contemporary hoodie, or a statement necklace, the color pink is fresh and alive.

In jewelry, of course, you cannot go wrong with a cool piece of rose quartz dangling from a chunky necklace. In a bracelet or earrings, the amazing power of pink is as welcome in a formal gathering as in a beachside Sunday brunch.
