What is Citrine?

Looking deeper into the building blocks of the stone, this glamorous quartz crystal, with its cheerful sunny shimmer, is ideally named for the lemon-yellow glow of this lovely stone. In fact, the meaning of its name comes from the Latin citrina, is translated quite aptly as “yellow.” Its attractive pale yellow hue comes from the ferric or aluminum minerals included in the stone. Most mined crystals come from Brazil, where natural geothermal processes create this highly desired warm yellow gemstone.

Can you Wear Citrine Every Day?

Classified as a quartz stone, or quartz citrine, the crystal has a relative hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale, which makes it fairly resilient to minor scratches and ideal as a versatile stone for daily-driver jewelry wear.

Is Quartz Man-Made?

Citrine quartz forms in Brazilian mines and accounts for much of the yellow citrine on the market. It’s often called the “money stone” because of the popular belief that it can manifest abundance and wellness.

Natural crystals often come directly from nature (this form of citrine often has a gentle, translucent quality). Geothermal cooking in Mother Nature’s terrestrial kitchen produces citrine that displays its gentle, mellow sunshine color.

Alternatively, a variety of manually-produced citrine starts its life quite differently. Derived from its original purple genesis, this version of the gemstone forms in a purple amethyst mineral matrix, which is later heated to develop the vibrant amber hue of its final classification.

With carefully controlled heat, smoky quartz can also be transformed into citrine quartz. This happens because the heat affects the stone’s aluminum content, giving the crystal its signature yellow hue.
